Sometimes companies add features to their products to make them better, and they succeed. For example, a juice box is good, but a juice box with a straw attached to the side is much better! A laptop computer is good, but a laptop computer with a built-in video camera is more fun.

But sometimes companies get so anxious to add features, they forget that those features are supposed to make their products better. Attaching a straw to the side of a laptop does not help to quench thirst. Including videocameras on juice boxes may be fun but it significantly increases their cost.

Last night Jodie and I tried out this restaurant called Boston Market. It's weird. The concept is Swiss Chalet-style food in a KFC environment. They serve quarter chicken dinners, mashed potatoes, roast beef etc. for pretty cheap, seems like a reasonable idea. But they make one fatal mistake by adding what would seem like a harmless feature: dividers on the plastic plates. The intention is to divide the peas from the mashed potatoes so that they don't touch until they reach your stomach. The slab of turkey gets one compartment, completely protected from the macaroni's cheese sauce.

The problem with the cute little divider is that it destroys my fantasy. My fantasy is that I'm eating delicious roast beef and broccoli at a fancy restaurant. But when I look at my plate neatly divided into sections, all I see is TV dinner. The dividers are a symbol of the shitty heat-n-serve food that I went out to a Boston Market to avoid. Therefore I present my honourary slogan: Boston Market, TV Dinners without the TV.
