Thirty minutes

Taxi guy picked me up at my apartment at 1:30. Plenty of time to get to the airport for my three-thirtyish flight. I was curious about how to get to PDX - cab the whole way, or cab to the train station and take the MAX directly to the airport. The cabbie convinced me it was probably almost as fast to take the MAX, and I'd save $37 in fares.

The MAX was adequately futuristic and fun. I made friends with some Nike guy and another guy who carried bags around for Southwest Air. Eventually I made it to the airport - at about 2:50 - with time to spare.

By the time I found the United Airlines check in counter, my pocket watch read 2:58. I checked my ticket: three-thirtyish was actually 3:18, and this made me a bit nervous. I asked an idle United Air employee - and she told me I was SHIT OUTA LUCK! The lobby is 'closed' a half-hour before take off. No boarding pass for me.

I paid $100 to change my ticket to a flight that left 2 hours later, leaving me only 45 minutes at LAX to exit the plane, change terminals, check in, and mount Qantas Flight 26. The lady who sold me this ticket was careful to explain that making the connection was at-my-own-risk and if the flight was late or something, I would again be SHIT OUTA LUCK!

Two hours in PDX passed slowly as anxiety dominated my pulse. Eventually my flight boarded and I had another two hours of anxiety at 24,000 feet.

Touchdown in L.A.:
  • run down portable-hallway thing that connects terminal 2 to airplane
  • run down terminal 2 to exit 'secured area'
  • run to street
  • run around frantically, looking for taxi
  • get in taxi, "take me to the Qantas terminal!"
  • taxi driver kicks me out, it's over there!
  • run to terminal 1
  • run around frantically looking for Qantas counter
  • find Qantas counter, explain situation to rep
  • rep speeds me through check-in, points me at security
  • run to security
  • go through security
  • run down to end of terminal 1
  • find Mark waiting smiling, and relieved

The flight was uneventful and fun. I made it! Saving $37 ended up costing a $100 and a shitload of anxiety for both myself and Mark.
